Better season of kimonos

This is Tomomi from Kimono Time Yuu providing the kimono dressing experience in Yokohama.

Good season is coming to dress up and go out in a kimono.
Why do you know that I say that?

Because kimonos are closely related to the seasons of the year. Kimonos are the clothes which value a season. I think it’s one of views with four seasons in Japan.

There are mainly two types of how to sew a kimono called ‘Hitoe, unlined kimono’ and ‘Awase, a lined kimono’. We change into ‘Hitoe’ like summer clothes in June and ‘Awase’ like winter clothes’ in October. It’s the same as a school uniform in Japan. We change into summer school uniform on the first day of June and winter school uniform on the first day of October.
The first part, good season to wear a kimono and go out in it is from October. Because we feel good weather and we change into ‘Awase’. Kimono is expensive and it’s more difficult to saw it than Hitoe, so we often have only ‘Awase’, and we can wear it for 8 months from October to May longer than ‘Hitoe’ too. Some people say that is rule. But I don’t think that. I think it’s wisdom and dress smartly.
